Real Club de Golf Cerdanya

Real Club de Golf Cerdanya was founded in 1929, making it one of the ten oldest golf clubs in Spain. The course sits in the Cerdanya valley outside Puigcerda, 137 km from Barcelona, at the border with France. Its Royal designation and historic clubhouse give it an atmosphere that feels closer to a classic British parkland course than anything else in Spain.

The layout was designed by Javier Arana, widely regarded as the greatest Spanish golf course architect of the 20th century, whose other works include El Saler, Club de Campo, and Aloha. Arana's Cerdanya course runs through century-old trees with a unique Pyrenean microclimate: cool summers, crisp autumns, and occasional snow in winter. The course is not long by modern standards, but Arana's strategic bunkering and the placement of trees around the greens demand precise iron play rather than power. Short-iron accuracy is everything here.

The DP World Tour professional Alvaro Velasco has publicly named Cerdanya as his favourite course in the world, having played tournaments across the globe. That endorsement captures something about the course that modern designers rarely achieve: it has a soul.

The club sits minutes from the medieval town of Puigcerda and the French enclave of Llivia. The Cerdanya is one of the most scenic valleys in the Pyrenees, with hiking, skiing (La Molina and Masella 20 minutes away), and excellent mountain cuisine. Combined with Fontanals, 15 minutes further into the valley, it makes a compelling two-course mountain stop on any Catalan golf trip.
